I’m Listening

A couple of days ago, I posted a request that black Americans share book recommendations with me, in my effort to better educate myself about their experience. Since then, I’ve read articles by black women, pointing out in so many words that white people can do their own damned research and they’ve already got enough to deal with right now without having to spend time educating us, thank you very much. So, basically, it’s MY responsibility, not theirs. And they’re right. I apologize for any insensitivity I displayed. I now plan to make a concerted effort to find reading material that will teach me more about the American experience from an African American’s perspective. I do want to learn, and contribute however I can to a more equal, just, and loving country. All my life, I have found solace and knowledge in the words of others, so reading is my way of initiating a better understanding on my part. I’ll let you know how it goes.
